THE CONTEXT
Soma Analytics is a startup created by 3 students who combined their skills (Computer Science, Psychology and Business) to help people suffering from depression and burnout. Kelaa is the name of their app. I was the Lead Designer for the startup for 2 years until Oct 2018.
When I first started, I performed an experience evaluation of their service and conducted initial user interviews to better understand the product and narrow down what could be improved.
The findings:
An app originally built for small testing groups
Unclear interface structure
Bland visuals
Confusing use of colour
Overall lack of immersion
“I don’t know where I am and where I’m going.”

The Task
Based on the findings, I listed and presented my goals to the team:
Redesign the landing page and the surrounding structure
Create more engaging visuals
Design an immersive and easy to navigate experience
Take it from test app to live app
Back to the Essentials
THE MODEL OF STRESS
According to the Lead Psychologist, the first core idea behind Kelaa is that ‘stress is an imbalance between demands and resources.’
Kelaa’s mission is therefore to provide people with the tools to rebalance their life.
THE MODEL OF MENTAL RESILIENCE
This is the second model upon which Kelaa is based.
When someone experiences stress, there are different stages. To be useful and relevant, Kelaa must help people at any stage.
Analogies
Analogies will help structure the new Kelaa interface. I picked 2 analogies: The book structure and the step by step approach of a good navigation tool.
Sketching Out Interface Ideas
Here are workshops’ outcomes with the team which I facilitated to help define the new Kelaa interface structure
The Proposed Landing Page
A navigation tool enables you to:
See your current position
See your destination
See the steps towards it
Mark your favourite sessions along the way
During a stressful moment, pause at anytime to find your emergency toolbox
A book has:
A table of contents
Chapters
A conclusion
